TURKEYS
The Texas Rio Grande turkey is a unique and iconic subspecies of wild turkey found primarily in the central and southern regions of the state. Known for its long legs, lighter body coloration, and distinctive tail feathers with buff-colored tips, the Rio Grande turkey thrives in the open brush country, oak savannas, and river bottoms of Texas. These birds are highly adaptable and often seen roosting in tall trees near water sources. Spring gobbler season is a favorite among hunters, as the males—known as toms—put on impressive displays of strutting and gobbling during the breeding season. With healthy populations and strong conservation efforts, Texas remains a top destination for pursuing the challenging and rewarding Rio Grande wild turkey.
